Tips for a successful interview.

What does Xplor look for in a candidate?

We’re looking for curious, empathetic, and people-centric candidates. We want people who are motivated by meaningful work and share our purpose of helping our customers succeed.

Candidates should resonate and align with our four core values, have a positive outlook, be comfortable with ambiguity and thrive working in an ever evolving and complex environment. We love meeting big picture thinkers and doers, people who can be both, tactical and strategic, aim high and put people first in everything they do.

How do I apply for a role with Xplor?

All our job openings are advertised on our careers page https://www.xplortechnologies.com/gb/careers. We kindly ask you apply through this portal only and don't send your application to an individual Xplorer via email, LinkedIn, or other channel.

Applying through the portal is quick and easy, and also makes sure that everyone on the hiring team has immediate access to your application.

Do I have to create a “Smartr” profile after I’ve submitted my application?

No, but there are some benefits to creating a profile. Our recruitment software SmartRecruiters is used by many organisations around the globe and a Smartr account allows you to easily track your applications, discover job matches and personalised insights.

Does your ATS (Applicant Tracking System) automatically reject applications?

Yes, there's an auto-reject function for candidates applying for roles in Australia, Canada, the US and the UK if they’re not authorised to lawfully work in the country they’re applying for.

However, we don’t ever auto-reject based on keywords or specific phrases in your CV. All our applications are reviewed by humans.

You mentioned company core values, what are they and what do they mean to you?

Our values are the core beliefs we stand for at Xplor and they're an essential part of how we hire and recognise our team members. We know that by living up to our values we'll help people succeed.

  • Make life simple: We challenge over-complication. We know the greatest impact can be achieved when simplicity is a priority.
  • Build for people: We put our colleagues, clients, and their customers at the heart of every decision. We focus on people’s needs to create the best experiences.
  • Move with purpose: We are intentional about where we’re heading. We keep pace and continuously improve as we go, delivering better outcomes faster.
  • Create lasting communities: We create strong relationships and leave a legacy. We look for commonalities and shared passions to thrive together.

What's the best way to format my CV?

While our ATS (Applicant Tracking System) allows for creativity, our Hiring Managers prefer a CV in a simple and clean format. It should be easy to read and capture all the important information at the top.

Please submit your CV as a .docx format. If you use a pdf, export it from the MS word .doc. Please don’t scan a pdf as an image and avoid headers and footers if possible. Use one standard font throughout the entire document and avoid tables and columns.

Finally, please don’t include a profile photo. Studies suggest that photos on CVs may influence the hiring process, potentially leading to biases.

I’m in a hurry but I don’t have an updated CV at hand.

That’s okay. You’ve got a few other options after clicking the “I’m interested” button on our careers page.

You can manually fill out a profile and talk about your experience, skills and previous employment, or you can simply apply with your LinkedIn, Indeed or SEEK profile (for candidates in AU and NZ).

They say 'cover letters are dead'. Are they for Xplor?

We like them as we know a CV doesn’t always tell the whole story, but we don’t make them a requirement.

A cover letter is a great tool to give us an insight into your personality, and provide more information about your current situation, the type of role, and the flexibility you're looking for.

Do I have to respond to your Self-Identification questions?

As part of Xplor’s commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workforce, we ask candidates to voluntarily and anonymously self-identify through a few demographic questions. It’s up to you if you’d like to share this information, and your decision to answer or not answer ("prefer not to say") those questions will have no impact on your application.

This information helps us to assess our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategies. This includes benchmarking the diversity of candidate pools, measuring our outreach efforts, and other reporting purposes.

If you choose to respond, your individual responses will not be shared with anyone who will assess your application or be involved in the hiring process, and your responses won't play any role in our hiring decision. Xplor makes employment-related decisions based solely on an individual’s skill sets, experience and job performance.

Can I apply for more than one position at Xplor at a time?

Yes, you can apply for multiple openings but please be intentional about the roles you’re applying for.

What is a Recruiter Screen and what does it involve?

The Recruiter Screen is the first step of our hiring process. It's an opportunity for us to learn more about you and tell you more about the role you've applied for.

During the Recruiter Screen, you’ll be asked about your experience and skills to make sure they’re aligned with the role. The recruiter will also make sure compensation expectations align, share more about the role, Xplor and our culture and values, and answer any questions you may have.

If the conversation goes well, the next step will either be an interview with the Hiring Manager or a practical assessment. And we'll always follow up with you, regardless of the decision.

How do I make an accessibility request?

We understand that diverse candidates have diverse needs. If you require additional support or have any accessibility needs throughout any stage of your recruitment journey with us, you can let us know by emailing talent@xplortechnologies.com.

How would you describe Xplor’s Engineering Culture?

The biggest part culturally at Xplor is that we rely heavily on our engineers to be dynamic. Xplor is not company (yet) where you’ll have really well-defined requirements and rigid processes. Our Engineers have a lot of input into the process and requirements. However, there can be challenges and ambiguity you as an Engineer have to overcome – and we know that’s not for everyone. The positive side of this is that you get to have a lot of say and ownership in the product and the process.

Engineering principles
  • Fail fast, fail small
  • Get things done
  • You are doing important things that matter
  • Have fun
What we stand for in Engineering?
  • Committed to personal growth
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Continuous feedback
  • Start to finish ownership
  • Uses agile methodologies
  • Continuous delivery
  • Internal mobility
  • Remote-OK

I’m a Software Engineer – what are the coding languages used at Xplor?

Xplor is dynamic company with many different products and technologies. We have evolved from a bunch of start-ups to a single company with a single goal. We continue to iterate on our processes and technologies to find common ground between the different projects. You can find everything from super modern to older languages. We have cloud and on prem, depending on the group. The great part of Xplor is you can find anything you are interested in. Our most common languages include:

  • node.js
  • react native

  • .net core
  • java
  • php
  • typescript
  • python
  • Swift
  • Kotlin

What's the dress code at Xplor?

Even though you’re boarding a rocket ship, there’s no requirement for a space suit or any other formal attire. Wear whatever is comfortable, dressing for the day ahead. Most Xplorers wear smart casual.

Do you have any tips for video interviews?

With more and more people working remotely, we’ve moved to video interviewing for most roles at Xplor. Here's some general advice:

  • Make sure you download the video application that's being used for the interview. At Xplor, we use Microsoft Teams for all our interviews (some other popular tools are Zoom, Slack or Google Meet). If you already have Teams, make sure it’s updated and working.
  • Please always double-check that microphone and sounds are working okay your settings a few minutes before the interview.
  • Always try to find a quiet corner with no background noise to disrupt the call
  • We know it’s not always possible, but try to minimise external distractions as much as possible, so you can focus during the call. Having said that, we’ve seen it all, kids, dogs, cats and parrots, so don’t stress if the unexpected happens.

Is it okay to ask questions at any stage of your interview process?

Yes, it absolutely is. Your interview is an opportunity for you to get to know us too and thoughtful questions demonstrate your level of understanding, your interest, and your passions, so please don't hold back.

I know Xplor is an international company, how do you all communicate with each other?

It’s so important to be able to communicate with other Xplorers around the globe and to make sure everyone feels connected. Our main tools are Workplace (by Meta) and Microsoft Teams, and some of our teams also use Slack.

Our leaders share regular business updates on Workplace and we have quarterly Global All Hands, so we can hear directly from our CEO on the latest news and company updates.

Remote vs Hybrid vs On-site?

We’re big on flexibility. We have a lot of remote employees. We also have a lot of Xplorers that live near one of our offices, and for those people we’ve found that generally the hybrid model works best.

We typically highlight the work model in our job ads, but if you can’t see it please check with your Talent Team contact. We’re open to discussing different needs and flexibility, to suit both you and the role.

I didn't get through the recruitment process the first time. Can I try again?

If you weren't considered for a role and you see the same job being advertised again within a short period of time, please hold off. It wasn’t meant to be.

However, we do encourage you to keep checking our careers page for future careers opportunities. Job requirements can vary across our different business unit and teams, so if you believe you’re a match and have the right skills and experience for another role, please do apply and don't let a previous rejection put you off.
